Chevy Offers Helpful Hints for Transporting Your Christmas Tree

December has arrived, and that means many different things to different people. Those of us who celebrate Christmas will have to face an onslaught of visits to shopping malls or online stores. But before that, the first order of business is to buy a Christmas tree. For those who prefer to go all-natural with their Christmas trees, Chevrolet isn’t going to let you do it without sharing some tips on how to properly secure and transport your freshly cut trees from farm to home.

"According to the automaker, the first thing you need to do is to dress warmly, wear gloves, and bring a piece of cardboard that you can use to kneel on when you start cutting your tree down"

The American Automobile Association (AAA) recently published a survey that said that in the past three years, 20 million Americans did not properly secure their new Christmas trees to their cars. That’s a revealing discovery that can be avoided if proper measures are taken. This is where Chevrolet comes into the picture. According to the automaker, the first thing you need to do is to dress warmly, wear gloves, and bring a piece of cardboard that you can use to kneel on when you start cutting your tree down. You’ll also need to bring a tarp to put inside the cabin if you’re transporting your tree inside your car. If you’re transporting the tree on top of your car, cross-rails are important so the tree doesn’t damage the paint on your car.

Once the tree has been cut, it’s critical to tie it with either a rope or netting. Lay the tree directly overtop the cross rails with the stump end facing toward the front of your car. Loop twine over and around it, repeat, and cinch it with a figure-eight motion to tightly secure the tree to the rails. According to Chevrolet, placing the stump end of the tree toward the front of the car helps reduce aerodynamic drag, ensuring a safer drive home.

When the tree is stowed and secured, try to use secondary roads on your way home. Avoid highways as much as you can. It also helps if you happen to have a car like the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse. Promoting the new SUV is actually the purpose of these tips. It’s a bit cheeky, but we’ll give points to Chevy for the creativity.
